"Insufficient storage" error when I have half a gig free space on internal memory...

Cannot update or download any new apps. I have 465MB free space of internal storage. Have tried the "solution" offered on another thread here re: uninstalling playstore updates and that didn't work.

Getting very frustrated with the z3 compact as it seems obvious even with the ability to partially move apps to SD card there was never going to be enough space to operate this as a AAA flagship phone. Sony must have known how many Android apps come bolted on taking up the lion share of the internal storage. Why make a phone with this level of specs and then skimp on some lousy cheap storage space?

Yes,you can remove the card and backup your contacts and you can perform a software repair using PC Companion. The process will erase all internal memory. You might need to charge your device for about 1-2 hours before so the device has at least 80% battery.

Make sure the device is not connected to computer or laptop and turned off (sometimes you have to press power button and volume up until the device vibrates 3 times or on some devices you have to press the small button near the SIM tray or on the back of the device).

Open PC companion->support zone->phone/tablet software update->repair my phone/tablet blue highlighted.Follow the steps given,do not connect your phone until prompted to press volume down while plugging USB cable. If PC companion does not start the repair process, you might need to run it in compatibility mode with Windows 7 (in some cases XP).

What does it say in the second sentence of the post above?

It seems lollipop doesn't offer the free memory option in settings-apps. You do not need to be disrespectful. Usually, before on KK there was a difference between the available memory to install apps and the rest of internal memory.

My phone does not work. Is there a solution?

Why was so little storage put on this device, when at the time it came out you couldn't even move (partially) the apps to the external memory? Was there any modelling done of how much storage the average flagship user used for apps? Was there any advice given to customers on whether to choose a Z3 or Z3 compact based on usage and limitations? Nope. Just a notification literally every time I've woken my phone for 4 months telling me I'm running out of space and functions may not work. It's a  farce.

Can you try to clear cache for the device and see if that helps?

I can't. I click it and the standard pop up box tells me it will clear the cache, I click yes and then the same amount of memory shows afterwards (5.6 MB).

Look if I reset the phone will it still read all the music, video, photos and podcasts I have on the external SD card? I just want to get this sorted out, willing to spend the hours resetting it up if it just WORKS.
