media.extractor drains battery after 39.2.A.0.442 upgrade

Xperia XZ after FOTA to 39.2.A.0.442 discharges battery during 8 hours to 0% even if it is not used.

A reason is media.extractor process which is running all the time in backgound. As it can be seen in adb shell:

User 29%, System 2%, IOW 0%, IRQ 0%
User 34 + Nice 325 + Sys 25 + Idle 833 + IOW 0 + IRQ 3 + SIRQ 1 = 1221

I have not figured out yet if any particular media file causes it, anyway this is new behavior, definitely this is a degrade compare to previos FW.

Hi Cristofer,

Since the recent Android update to 7.1.1., my Xperia XZ's battery life has been almost cut in half. My usage has not changed.

Prior to the update, I would comfortably have 20+ hours battery on a full charge, now it is around 10 hours. Why is this, and how do I get my battery back to what it was?

Furthermore, the phone gets quite warm with normal usage.

So, since the update:

1) Battery life cut in half
2) Phone is constantly warm

I have repaired the device/factory reset 5 times, erased the SD card, tried with no SD card - still to no avail.

What can you advise?

Regards,
David.

Hi @davjac7, sorry to hear this. Slightly_frowning_Face

Based on your description of the phone being constantly warm it sounds like there is a process running continuously in the background. Do you experience any difference if you use it in safe mode for a couple of hours?

After another factory reset the temperature seems to have stabilised. Further, the most recent update from a couple of days ago seems to have helped slightly. I'm actually following the advice by Emir written in his article here: /t5/FAQ/Improving-Battery-time-and-battery-enhancement-features/m-p/1217684#U1217684 So apparently after a reset the phone battery calibration requires around a week to stabilise. I'll wait for that time to lapse and monitor in the meantime.

@davjac7 Thanks for letting me know! Don't hesitate to get back to me if you should have any further questions about this.
