Touch Pad problems - VGN-SZ2M/B

I have a VGN-SZ2M/B and I'm finding that the touch pad is becoming increasingly unreliable, at random intervals the cursor will shoot around the screen opening and closing windows randomly, at other times it will freeze. :slight_frown:

Using a mouse seems to be problem free, however.

Any help appreciated.

TIA

Carl

Hi Carl,

welcome to Club VAIO..:smileyhappy:

Press the windows key+R to open the Run box type devmgmt.msc and press OK

Click Continue on the User Account Control window.

Is there a pointing device or PS2 mouse listed..?

Hi,

under "Mice and other pointing devices" only "PS/2 Compatible Mouse" is listed.

TIA

I've done the following:

1 . . . installed the latest Synaptic drivers.

This seemed to work after a fashion - the touch pad was slightly more stable, but then stopped working completely and disappeared from the device manager.

2 . . . re-installed the USB mouse drivers.

Not much changed, but when I plugged in a mouse both it AND the touch pad worked. Unplugged, the touch pad still didn't work nor did it show up on the device manager.

3 . . . un-installed the Synaptic drivers.

Now it appears to be working fine, I've been using it for the past hour or so with no problems.

I'm still not convinced everything's ok. In fact, since the left button seemed to keep sticking I suspect there may be a physical problem i.e. there's dirt in the electrics. But I'm happy with what I have, so far.

Now if I could just get the right strip to scroll... any suggestions?

Hi Carl,

try this..

Right click once on PS2 mouse and select properties.

Select the 'Driver' tab and click on Update driver.

A new Hardware Update Window will appear, select Install from a list or specific location (advanced) and click next

The window now changes select 'Don't search I will choose the driver to install' and click next.

If 'Alps Pointing-device' (possibly Alps Pointing-device for Vaio) appears in the new window, select it and click next.. (if the 'Alps Pointing-device' does not appear in the list remove the tick from 'Show Compatible Hardware' and select Alps Electric from the Manufacturer column then 'Alps Pointing-device' (possibly Alps Pointing-device for Vaio) from the model column and then click next.

Wait for the driver to install then click Finish, a System Settings Change window should now appear prompting you to restart your Computer and click Yes to restart.....

Also have you tried giving the stuck left mouse button a blast with some compressed air..

Thanks for the feedback.

When I get to the "Hardware Update Wizard" and uncheck the "Show compatible hardware" box there is no listing for Alps.

I found a driver on the 'net for Alps Pointing-device for VAIO version 5.3.512.4 and was able to install that.

It all seems to be working nicely.

Thanks for your help much appreciated.

Regards,

Carl

Hi Carl,

Do you have an Alps driver listed in C:\drivers\pointing.?

If not download the original drivers for your SZ2M using the following link: SZ2M Original Drivers Package

Once download extract the files..

Then as before right click once on PS2 mouse and select properties.

Select the 'Driver' tab and click on Update driver.

A new Hardware Update Window will appear, this time select have disc and browse to the location of (and select) your Alps driver, then click next and follow the wizard..
