I'm having exactly the same issue as here - and no solution proposed worked: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/other-tvs/firmware-update-for-kdl-40wd653/td-p/2624843 - basically, I downloaded the appropriate firmware, followed every step, even went through factory reset, the scan for the USB System Update always ends with the same message: "Software update is not available in TV current mode." - please help, the original firmware on the television is simply unable to play far too many newer video formats...
