How can memory (RAM) made by another company other than sony damage my laptop?

No damage, no problem. I'm just think of upgrading. I have a vaio vgn-a517b which has two memory slots both filled with only 256mb's of memory and I'd like to upgrade to 2gig one gig in each. I checked the sony endorsed memory and it would cost me 600 euro to get sony memory but I can buy memory online which is a slightly diffrent speed but has a garantee that it will work in my machine. The SONY website says RAM made by another company could damage my computer.
Cheap RAM will cost less than 100 euro, compared to 600 euro.

WHAT's the diffrence?
